Geological Setting:

Environment:
High probability of damages, especially for coral reefs/structures/
/architectures:
-------------------
In my profession, I have to do with fossil coral reefs.
"Coral reefs are underwater wave-resistant mounds that are virtual ecosystems all by themselves. They are made up of corals, algae, mollusks, bryozoans, brachiopods, echinoderms, and sponges. Coral sands and solid limestone also play a large part in the buildup of a coral reef.
Coral reefs grow upward by a rock like accumulation of calcium containing calcareous exoskeletons <structures / architectures > of past generations of coral animals".
More at:
---------------
Entire large geological structures are an ancient coral building up:
Another example are mountains as Dolomites (Northern Italy):
"Rising in the eastern sector of the Italian Alps is a famous group of outcroppings which the ancient inhabitants of the area, the Ladins, long referred to as Lis montes pàljes, meaning “the pale mountains”, due to the light hues of the rock in contrast to the darker tones of surrounding mountains. A Ladin legend has it that it was sylvan dwarves dwelling in the woods and caverns who caused those mountaintops to be lighter in colour by spinning moonbeams for weaving a bright diaphanous web around the peaks; they were said to have done this so that the daughter of the King of the Moon, who was the spouse of the king of the mountains, would not suffer pangs of homesickness for her faraway world, forever shining white. And the edelweiss which still survive here are said to be a gift of the princess brought from the Moon.
Those mountains are known around the world today as the Dolomites,..........."
"The modern theory of coral atoll formation was originated by Charles Darwin as a result of his observations at Tuamotu Archipelago (south central Pacific) and Cocos Keeling Island (eastern Indian Ocean) made between November 1835 and April 1836, during the voyage of the H.M.S. Beagle. His book, The Structure and Distribution of Coral Reefs, was first published in 1842 as Part 1 of the Geology of the Voyage of the 'Beagle.' "
------------------------
At:
we read:
"We can now at once see why encircling barrier-reefs stand so far from the shores which they front. We can also perceive, that a line drawn perpendicularly down from the outer edge of the new reef, to the foundation of solid rock beneath the old fringing-reef, will exceed by as many feet as there have been feet of subsidence, that small limit of depth at which the effective corals can live: -- the little architects having built up their great wall-like mass, as the whole sank down, upon a basis formed of other corals and their consolidated fragments. Thus the difficulty on this head, which appeared so great, disappears".
.......................
Also:
"As the barrier-reef slowly sinks down, the corals will go on vigorously growing upwards; but as the islands sinks, the water will gain inch by inch on the shore -- the separate mountains first forming separate islands within one great reef -- and finally, the last and highest pinnacle disappearing. The instant this takes place, a perfect atoll is formed: I have said, remove the high land from within an encircling barrier-reef, and an atoll is left, and the land has been removed. We can now perceive how it comes that atolls having sprung from encircling barrier-reefs, resemble them in general size, form, in the manner in which they are grouped together, and in their arrangement in single or double lines for they may be called rude outline charts of the sunken islands over which they stand. We can further see how it arises that the atolls in the Pacific and Indian oceans extend in lines parallel to the generally prevailing strike of the high islands and the great coast-lines of those oceans. I venture, therefore, to affirm, that on the theory of the upward growth of the corals during the sinking of the land, all the leading features in these wonderful structures, the lagoon-islands or atolls, which have so long excited the attention of the voyagers, as well as in the no less wonderful barrier-reefs, wether encircling small islands or streching for hundreds of miles along the shores of a continent are simply explained".
About the Coral Architecture:
--------------------
The concept of "Architecture" is at the basis of the studies about Coral Reefs. A sort of "leitmotif".
The Coral building process is another geological / zoological / ecological / palaeontological paradigm.
Perhaps, 1) The concept of "Architecture", 2) The slow, continue, gradual growth of Coral Reefs, 3) Their worldwide/global spreading since Paleozoic Era (500 million years ago), 4) The concepts of "colony", "community", "complex assemblage", seem to have a correlation with the orbital paradigm assumed for a KBO such as AW197.
Every individual coral seems to be a "tekton" for the whole Reef (structure/architecture).
To check an hypothesized correlation between the orbital paradigm and the trophic/favourable periods for living corals is very difficult.
More easily, we may be able to watch the time of a very dangerous event that works against the ecological equilibrium of a coral community.
Also, to watch the time of damages of fossil coral structures, as a consequence of tectonic events or bad human behaviour, may be easy.
"Underwater image of a healthy reef system in the Kerama Islands off southwestern Okinawa. Note the abundant live-coral coverage, numerous fish, sparse macroalgae coverage, and clear water. Several talks at the conference related increased sediment input and decreased fish populations to increased growth of macroalgae and reduced live-coral coverage on reefs around the globe" (10th International Coral Reef Symposium (ICRS), June 28-July 2, 2004). Photograph by Curt Storlazzi.
"Underwater image of a stressed reef system in the Kerama Islands off southwestern Okinawa. In comparison with the healthy reef system shown above, this one is affected by higher sediment runoff, causing more turbid water, less live-coral coverage, and more macroalgae coverage" ((10th International Coral Reef Symposium (ICRS), June 28-July 2, 2004).
Photograph by Curt Storlazzi.
According to Darwin's model, Coral Atolls are the result of Corals that are growing on submarine flanks of volcanic structures.
Tentatively, asteroid # 1991 Darwin is inserted in collected data.
Corals are killed by water's turbidity, that is a consequence of clouds of sand/mood grains that raise from the vibrating sea bottom.
Tentatively, asteroid # Nephele is inserted in collected data.
