Berlin Summer Olympics

"The Terror behind"

>>On August 1, 1936, Hitler opened the XIth Olympiad. Musical  fanfares directed by the famous composer Richard Strauss announced the dictator's arrival to the largely German crowd. Hundreds of athletes in opening day regalia marched into the stadium, team by team in alphabetical order. Inaugurating a new Olympic ritual, a lone runner arrived bearing a torch carried by relay from the site of the ancient Games in Olympia, Greece.
Forty-nine athletic teams from around the world competed in the Berlin Olympics, more than in any previous Olympics. Germany fielded the largest team with 348 athletes. The U.S. team was the second largest, with 312 members, including 18 African Americans. American Olympic Committee President Avery Brundage led the delegation. The Soviet Union did not participate in the Berlin Games.
Germany skillfully promoted the Olympics with colorful posters and magazine spreads. Athletic imagery drew a link between Nazi Germany and ancient Greece, symbolizing the Nazi racial myth that a superior German civilization was the rightful heir of an "Aryan" culture of classical antiquity. This vision of classical antiquity emphasized ideal "Aryan" racial types: heroic, blue-eyed blonds with finely chiseled features.
Concerted propaganda efforts continued well after the Olympics with the international release in 1938 of "Olympiad," the controversial documentary directed by German film maker and Nazi sympathizer Leni Riefenstahl. She was commissioned by the Nazi regime to produce this film about the 1936 Summer Games.
Germany emerged victorious from the XIth Olympiad. German athletes captured the most medals, and German hospitality and organization won the praises of visitors. Most newspaper accounts echoed the New York Times report that the Games put Germans "back in the fold of nations," and even made them "more human again." Some even found reason to hope that this peaceable interlude would endure. Only a few reporters, such as William Shirer, understood that the Berlin glitter was merely a facade hiding a racist and oppressively violent regime.
As post-Games reports were filed, Hitler pressed on with grandiose plans for German expansion. Persecution of Jews resumed. Two days after the Olympics, Captain Wolfgang Fuerstner, head of the Olympic village, killed himself when he was dismissed from military service because of his Jewish ancestry.
Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. Within just three years of the Olympiad, the "hospitable" and "peaceable" sponsor of the Games unleashed World War II, a conflict that resulted in untold destruction. With the conclusion of the Games, Germany's expansionist policies and the persecution of Jews and other "enemies of the state" accelerated, culminating in the Holocaust. <<

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

>>The 1936 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XI Olympiad, were held in 1936 in Berlin, Germany. Berlin won the bid to host the Games, with the International Olympic Committee members choosing Berlin over Barcelona on April 26, 1931, at the 29th IOC Session in Barcelona, Spain. It was the second and last time that they have gathered in an IOC Session to cast their ballot for a host city in the same city which was bidding to host an Olympic Games. The only other time this occurred was at the inaugural IOC Session in Paris, France, on April 24, 1894. Then, Athens, Greece, and Paris, France, were chosen to host the 1896 Summer Olympics and 1900 Summer Olympics respectively.
Also, according to the International Olympic Committee Vote History web page, these Olympic Games were the first to be contested by IOC members casting their votes for their favorite choice host city. Here was the result of that inaugural voting in chart form; the German flag flown at the time of the Berlin win was of the Weimar Republic.

The bid to host the Olympics was won before the National Socialist German Workers Party (a.k.a. the Nazi party) gained power in Germany in 1933. Since, however, the party now was in power, some leaders in the government saw the Olympic Games as an opportunity to promote their ideology, particularly its promotion of the superiority of the "Aryan Race". Adolf Hitler was convinced by Joseph Goebbels to allow the games to take place in Germany. Preparation for the Games started in the early 1930s. Hitler used the Olympics as a tool for propaganda. Film-maker Leni Riefenstahl, a favorite of Hitler, was commissioned by the International Olympic Committee to film the Games. The film, titled Olympia, originated many of the techniques now commonplace to the filming of sports.
By allowing only members of the "Aryan race" to compete for Germany, Hitler further promoted his ideological belief of racial supremacy. Although Germany won most of the medals in the Olympics, other athletes, such as African-American athlete Jesse Owens, who won four gold medals, showed great athleticism through performance.
Hitler removed signs stating "Jews not wanted" and similar slogans from the main tourist attractions. Hitler desired to clean up Berlin, the German Ministry of Interior authorized the chief of Berlin Police to arrest all gypsies and keep them in a special camp. Nazi officials ordered that foreign visitors should not be subjected to the criminal strictures of anti-homosexual laws.
Total ticket revenues were 7.5 million Reichsmarks, with a profit of over 1 million marks. The official budget did not include outlays by the city of Berlin (which issued an itemized report detailing its costs of 16.5 million marks) or the German National Government (which did not make its costs public, but is estimated to have spent US$30 million in mostly capital outlays).

Nazi influence on and use of sporting events
Hans von Tschammer und Osten, who was the head of the Reich Sports Office, played a major role in the structure and organization of the Olympics. He believed that the use of sports would harden the German spirit and instill unity among the German youths. Von Tschammer also believed that sports was a "way to weed out the weak, Jewish, and other undesirables".  Many Jews and Gypsies were banned from participating in sporting events.

Dispute over boycott of the Olympics in the U.S.
During the 1936 summer Olympics, there were many different views on whether the games should be allowed or discontinued. The people who voiced their opinions on the debate included Americans Avery Brundage, Ernest Lee Jahncke, and Judge Jeremiah Mahoney. The United States considered boycotting the Olympic games, since participating in the festivity might be considered as support for the Nazi Germany regime and its anti-Semitic policies. However, others argued that the Olympic Games should not be a reflection of political views but strictly a contest of the greatest athletes.
Avery Brundage, President of the American Olympic Committee was against the boycott, stating that the Jewish athletes were being treated fairly and that the games should continue. Brundage believed that politics played no role in sports, and they should be considered two different entities during the controversial Olympics. He explained stating, “The very foundation of the modern Olympic revival will be undermined if individual countries are allowed to restrict participation by reason of class, creed, or race.”  Brundage also believed that there was a “Jewish-Communist conspiracy” that existed to keep the United States out of competing in the Olympic games.
Unlike Brundage, Jeremiah Mahoney was against the Olympics and supported a boycott against the games. Mahoney, president of the Amateur Athletic Union, led newspaper editors and anti-Nazi groups to protest against an American team participating in the Berlin Olympics. Mahoney contested that discrimination went against Olympic rules and participation showed support for Hitler’s Reich.
African Americans and Jewish Americans also expressed their opinions for or against American participation. Most African American newspapers supported the Olympics. The Philadelphia Tribune and The Chicago Defender both agreed that Black victories would undermine Nazi views of Aryan supremacy. They believed it would spark more Black pride at home. American Jewish organizations opposed the Olympics. The American Jewish Congress and the Jewish Labor Committee staged rallies and supported the boycott of German goods to show their disdain for American participation.
Eventually, Avery Brundage won the debate, manipulating the Amateur Athletic Union to close a vote in favor of sending an American team to the Berlin Olympics, winning by only two and a half votes. Mahoney’s efforts to incite a boycott of the Olympic games in the United States failed. President Roosevelt demanded the participation of U.S.A. in the Olympics, intending to keep the tradition of America being void of outside influence intact.
The 1936 summer Olympics had the largest representation of nations participating than any other previous Olympics. These nations included the United States which, despite the debate, decided to send an Olympic team to Berlin, although some American competitors (including Milton Green and Norman Canners, both Jewish athletes) decided to abstain from participating and boycotted the Olympic games.

Jesse Owens

Jesse Owens' participation in the 1936 Berlin Summer Olympics was controversial because he was African American at a time when segregation and racial discrimination were the norm in the U.S.A. However, during the Olympics Owens was able to freely use public transportation and enter bars and other public facilities without the difficulty he would face as a Black man in the States. Adolf Hitler was present during the Olympics and did not acknowledge the accomplishments of any Olympian, as the Olympic Committee believed that Hitler should retain Olympic neutrality and avoid congratulating any Olympic participants. It was therefore not abnormal that Hitler didn't shake his hand after his victories. Indeed, on Owens return to the States, president Roosevelt did not deign to shake his hand in congratulations. The German crowds adored Owens, and he forged a long-term friendship with German competitor Lutz Long.

Highlights

It is widely repeated that Hitler snubbed Jesse Owens and his achievements. However, while Hitler did not congratulate Owens, he did not congratulate any athlete (including the German athletes) after the first day. Hitler did leave the stadium just before another black American athlete, Cornelius Johnson, was set to receive his medal.
United States Olympic Committee president Avery Brundage became a main supporter of the games being held in Germany, arguing that "politics has no place in sport", despite having initial doubts.
In the cycling match sprint finals, the German Toni Merkens fouled Arie van Vliet of the Netherlands. Instead of being disqualified, he was fined 100 marks and kept his gold.
Jesse Owens won four gold medals in the sprint and long jump events. His German competitor Lutz Long offered Owens advice after he almost failed qualifying in the long jump and was posthumously awarded the Pierre de Coubertin medal for sportsmanship.
Rie Mastenbroek of the Netherlands won three gold medals and a silver in swimming.
In the freestyle, swimmers originally dove from the pool walls, but diving blocks were incorporated at the 1936 Olympics.
Rower Jack Beresford won his fifth Olympic medal in the sport, and his third gold medal.
The U.S. eight-man rowing team from the University of Washington won the gold medal, coming from behind to defeat the Germans and Italians with Adolf Hitler in attendance.
The Olympic Flame was used for the second time at these games, but this marked the first time it was brought to the Olympic Town by a torch relay, with the starting point in Olympia, Greece.
The games were the first to have live television coverage. The German Post Office, using equipment from Telefunken and Fernseh, broadcast over seventy hours of coverage to special viewing rooms throughout Berlin and Potsdam and a few private TV sets, over Paul Nipkow TV Station. The broadcasts were used as a plot element in Contact, a science fiction novel by Carl Sagan, later adapted as a movie.
Basketball and handball made their debut at the Olympics, both as outdoor sports. Handball would not appear again on the program until 1972.
German gymnasts Konrad Frey and Alfred Schwarzmann both won three gold medals.
In the marathon two Korean athletes won medals — Sohn Kee-chung (gold) and Nam Sung-yong (bronze) — running for Japan and under Japanese names. Japan had annexed Korea in 1910.
In the quarter-finals of the football tournament, Peru beat Austria 4-2 in extra-time, but a rematch was ordered, since Peruvian fans had stormed the field when the score was 2-2 and had injured an Austrian player. The Peruvian government ordered the Olympic team to withdraw in protest, seeing this as an insult, while Austria went on to receive the silver medal.
The Republic of China's Three Principles of the People was chosen as the best national anthem of the games.
Germany had a prosperous year in the equestrian events, winning individual and team gold in all three disciplines, as well as individual silver in dressage.
Basketball was added to the Olympic program. In the final game, the United States beat Canada 19-8. The contest was played outdoors on a dirt court in driving rain. Due to the quagmire, the teams could not dribble, thus the score was held to a minimum. Joe Fortenbury was the high scorer for the U.S. with 7 points. Spectators did not have seats, and the people (approximately 1000) in attendance had to stand in the rain.
Despite not coming from fascist countries, French and Canadian Olympians gave what appeared to be the Hitler salute at the opening ceremony, although some have later claimed that they were just performing the Olympic salute, which was in fact a very similar action.
India won the gold medal in the field hockey event once again (they won the gold in all Olympics from 1928-1956, though they did not win any other awards in any other sport), defeating Germany 8-1 in the final. However, Indians were considered Indo-Aryans by the Germans and there was no controversy regarding their victory.
Estonia's Kristjan Palusalu won two gold medals in Men's Wrestling, marking the last time Estonia competed as an independent nation in the Olympics until 1992.
Italy's football team continued their dominance, winning the gold medal in these Olympics between their two consecutive World Cup victories (1934 and 1938). Much like the successes of German athletes, this triumph was claimed by supporters of Benito Mussolini's regime as a vindication of the superiority of the fascist system. <<

---------------------------------------------

>>August 1, 1936 proclaimed to the world that the eleventh Olympic competitions were about to commence. The ceremony thrilled us to our very bones by its grandeur; regularity and festivity.
To enable the reader to follow the Opening Ceremony closely, the events are given as they happened:
1:15 pm: The competitors mounted the special omnibuses arranged by the National Army Transportation Division. There was a long row of the buses, and our bus number was 150.
This big caravan began to creep at the scheduled time. With our golden 'kullahs' and light blue turbans, our contingent appeared as members of a marriage procession of some rich Hindu gentleman, rather than competitors in the Olympic Games.
All along the route, via Staaken, Heestrabe and Glockenturmstrabe to the Bell Tower, our final destination, long rows of enthusiasts waited on either side of the road and waved and cheered as each bus with the national flag flying slowly passed before their view.
2:15 pm: Arrived at the Bell Tower, proceeded to the Maifield.
2:30 pm: The women participants arrived from Friesenhaus and joined the competitors.
We were now divided into two groups, twenty six countries on the north side and twenty seven countries on the south side of the Maifield, facing each other. India was in the former group, Italy on her right and Haiti, which was represented by only one athlete, on her left.
Holland was facing India, with Great Britain and Iceland on either side.
A German placard-bearer was in front, Mr. Dhyan Chand with the national flag stood behind the bearer. Mr. Jagannath occupied the next position. The team stood three deep according to size.
3:15 pm: The Honour Battalion of the National Army arrived at the Bell Tower, and we saw for the first time the giant Zeppelin, Hindenberg, circling majestically over the Olympic Stadium.
3: 35 pm: The International Olympic Committee and Organising Committee arrived and took their places in the Maifield.
3:48 pm: The Fuhrer and the Reich Minister of the Interior arrived and inspected the Honour Battalion before the Bell Tower.
3:55 pm: The Fuhrer entered the Maifield, and was greeted by the Presidents of the International Olympic Committee and the Organising Committee.
The Fuhrer proceeded towards the Olympic Stadium, passing through the ranks of the competitors and officials. He saluted every flag which he passed en route, and we saw him, the idol of the Germans, for the first time.
He was clad in brown, an athletic figure, and trod the ground with a firm step. Occasionally he looked sideways and his face was serious, but not stern. The occupants of the Maifield, thousands in number, were hushed to complete silence. When the Fuhrer neared the Stadium, a multitude of young boys who were watching the proceedings from outside, saw their idol approaching towards them. With one great cry, they shouted "Heil, Hitler!" and broke the silence of the Maifield.
4:00 pm: The Fuhrer and the two Committees entered the Stadium. The large orchestra played the "March of Allegiance'" by Richard Wagner until the Fuhrer and the two Committees had entered their Loges.
4:05 pm: When the Fuhrer had taken his seat, the German national hymns, "Deutschland" and "Horst Wessel-Lied", were played. The hundred thousand Germans in the Stadium stood to their feet and sang with one voice the two hymns. It made a strange impression upon us, and not an eye was left dry.
India rose before our imagination, her poor begging for bread, her unemployed struggling for existence and her rich carefree of everything except themselves. Somehow the spring of our national feelings was touched, and the unity and solidarity of the people in the Stadium made us look with shame and regret at our poverty, destitution and discord.
4:12 pm: At the command, "Raise the Colours", a company from the Reich Naval Corps hoisted the flags of all participating nations on the various flag staffs at the Stadium.
4:13 pm: The ringing of the Olympic Bell heralded the opening of the Games. This bell was 16 tons in weight, and was hung from a 250 feet high tower named "The Bell Tower". The bell was a symbolic emblem for the Olympic Games, and was adorned with the two symbols, the "Reich Eagle" bearing the five Olympic rings and the Brandenburger Tor (Brandenburg Gate). Engraved around its rim was the traditional motto, "I summon the youth of the world". May peace have been its first peal!
4:15 pm: At the command ‘Participants March!’, the nations entered the Stadium, the spacing between the different nations being regulated at the mouth of the tunnel.
A distance of 5 yards was maintained between the placard carrier and the flag bearer. The distance between the last row of a national group and the placard carrier of the following group was 20 yards.
The order of the march was alphabetical (according to German spelling) with Greece, the home of Olympic Games, at the head and Germany, the host, bringing up the rear. India followed Holland, and was followed in turn by Iceland. As it marched past the Loges of Honour, each national group saluted the Fuhrer and the two Committees by lowering of the flag and according to the custom of the country.
Some nations were cheered mildly, others enthusiastically, according to the popularity or unpopularity of a nation earned in previous Olympics. Austria, perhaps, received the greatest ovation and clappings. India, though insignificant in terms of the number of the participants, was conspicuous by her colourful headgear and was greeted by quite a multitude of the huge crowd.
4:55 pm: The words of Baron de Coubertin were repeated over the loudspeaker “The important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning, but taking part. The essential thing in life is not conquering, but fighting well".
The President of the Organising Committee, H. E. Dr. Lewald, mounted the Speaker's Stand and delivered the address of welcome.
5:00 pm: The Fuhrer proclaimed open the Games of Berlin celebrating the XIth Olympiad of the modern era. At the command, "Hoist the Flag":
The Olympic Flag was hoisted
Salutes were fired by the artillery squad
30,000 carrier pigeons were released
Fanfares were played by the trumpeters
5:05 pm: The Olympic Hymn by Richard Strauss, under the direction of the composer, was played. The hymn was selected by public competition from over 3,000 entries.
5:11 pm: The last torch relay runner entered the Stadium and lit the Olympic Fire, which kept on burning till the evening of 16th August, when the Olympic Games were closed.
5:15 pm: The Marathon winner of the first Olympiad held at Athens in 1896, Spiridon Louis, handed over to the Fuhrer the olive branch, the emblem of victory and the symbol of youthful strength, from Athens.
5:18 pm: A German flag bearer and an active German participant stepped forward to take the Olympic Oath. The latter mounted the Speaker's platform and raised his right hand to take the Olympic Oath, while with his left hand he grasped the German flag, which the flag bearer held up to him.
This was the Oath: "We swear that we will take part in the Olympic Games in loyal competition, respecting the regulations which govern them, and desirous of participating in them in true spirit of sportsmanship, for the honour of our country and for the glory of sport.”
5:29 pm: The national groups left the Stadium in the order they entered, through the tunnel, on to the Maifield and to the waiting buses. And thus ended a day the proceedings of which shall ever be remembered by those who participated in them.
To us it meant more than a day of impressive ceremony. It introduced us to the competitions which tested our stamina, courage and skill. It ushered in a fortnight of healthy rivalries, and of wins and defeats taken in a remarkably sporting way.<<
