"The renowned volcano Krakatau (frequently misstated as Krakatoa) lies in
the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra. Collapse of the ancestral Krakatau edifice, perhaps in 416 AD, formed a 7-km-wide caldera. Remnants of this ancestral volcano are preserved in Verlaten and Lang Islands; subsequently Rakata, Danan and Perbuwatan volcanoes were formed, coalescing to create
the pre-1883 Krakatau Island. Caldera collapse during the catastrophic 1883 eruption destroyed Danan and Perbuwatan volcanoes, and left only a remnant
of Rakata volcano. This eruption, the 2nd largest in Indonesia during historical
time, caused more than 36,000 fatalities, most as a result of devastating tsunamis that swept the adjacent coastlines of Sumatra and Java. Pyroclastic surges traveled 40 km across the Sunda Strait and reached the Sumatra coast.
After a quiescence of less than a half century, the post-collapse cone of Anak Krakatau (Child of Krakatau) was constructed within the 1883 caldera at a point between the former cones of Danan and Perbuwatan. Anak Krakatau has been
the site of frequent eruptions since 1927".

Red hot rocks hurled from Anak Krakatau reach 2.5 km high

>Serang (ANTARA News) - The red hot glowing rocks spewed by Mt Anak Krakatau (GAK) in the Sunda Strait, Lampung province, on Sunday at 8.30 p.m had reached an altitude of up to 2.5 km, posing a potential threat to fishermen or other people getting close to the volcano.

Head of the monitoring post of Mt GAK in Pasuruan village, Cinangka subdistrict, Serang regency, Anton Tripambudi, said that the red hot rocks reaching an altitude of 2.5 km constitute a potential serious danger to fishermen and visitors trying to get near the volcano.

It could be clearly seen from Sertung and Rakata islands that each of the eruptions had a deafening sound and smoke belowing to 2,000 meters high.<

Krakatau Volcanic Eruption (Indonesia): May - August 1883 - 2

Krakatau - The Cataclysmic Events Of August  26-27, 1883

"After reawakening on May 20, 1883, Krakatau generated mild detonations from Perboewatan throughout May and June. By mid-June the summit crater of Perboewatan had been largely destroyed and the cite of eruption widened to include several new vents near Danan. By mid-July, banks of pumice were common features found floating in the Sunda Straits. However, some of the earliest tephra was basaltic, indicating that recharge of basalt magmas into the magma chamber beneath Krakatau may well have played a role in the intiation of these early eruptions.
Sunday, August 26. At 12:53 p.m., Krakatau delivered the opening salvo to a climactic eruption that would last throughout the evening of August 27. The initial blast generated an ear-shattering fusillade accompanied by a black churning cloud of volcanic debris that rose quickly to 25 km above the island. Over the next several hours, it would widen dramatically to the northeast, rising to a height of at least 36 km. The intensity of the eruptions increased throughout Sunday, frightening the coastal communities of western Sumatra, western Java, and adjacent islands. Later in the day, these villages would be battered by a series of devasting tsunamis generated by pyroclastic flows plunging into the sea. The worst was yet to come".

Monday, August 27. "This frightening display of volcanic power would culminate in a series of at least four stupendous eruptions that began at 5:30 a.m., climaxing in a colossal blast that literally blew Krakatau apart. The noise was heard over 4600 km away, throughout the Indian Ocean, from Rodriguez Island and Sri Lanka in the west, to Australia in the east. Two-thirds of the island collapsed beneath the sea into the underlying, partially vacated magma chamber. About 23 square kilometers of the island, including all of Perboewatan and Danan, subsided into a caldera about 6 km across. At an original height of 450 m, Danan had collapsed to depth of 250 m below sealevel".

"Around 1 pm on the 26th of August 1883, the explosions became more frequent occurring on the average every 10 minutes. Sailors on a ship, 120 km away from the island reported a black cloud of smoke rising above the volcano. At the time the rim of Krakatoa's crater was approximately 1,000 meters in diameter and had and average depth of 50 meters. The volcano' s central vent was blocked by a plug of solid lava and underneath it pressure was rapidly building up.

The Great Eruption

The renewed activity in May 1883 culminated in four gigantic explosions on August 26 and 27 of the same year. On the afternoon of August 26, 1883, (27 August local date) at 17: 07 Greenwich time (GMT), the first of these four violent explosions begun. A black cloud of ash was initially observed. It rose 17 miles (27 kilometers) above Krakatoa.

In the morning of the next day, on August 27, 1883, at 05:30, 06:44 and 10:02 GMT, three more violent eruptions occurred. It was the paroxysmal eruption which occurred at 10:02 which blew away the northern two-thirds of the island. This was the most severe violent volcanic explosion on Earth in modern times. The explosion was followed by the collapse of the unsupported volcanic chambers of Krakatoa forming the huge underwater caldera. It was this explosion and collapse of Krakatoa that generated catastrophic tsunami waves as high as 37 meters. (120 ft.) that caused havoc and destruction in the Sunda Strait".

The paroxysmic explosion on August 27, at 10:02 am is confirmed at:

Greater Than the Atomic Bomb

Taken and translated from August 1982 edition of Intisari Magazine
http://www.intisari-online.com

"The next August 27 will be one hundred and nineteen years after the horrifying explosion of Krakatoa which ever shook the world. On the day of August 27, 1883, that was on Sunday, the boom of the explosion at 10.02 a.m. could be heard from all parts of Nusantara-islands (more than 13,000 islands), even from Singapura, Australia, Philippines, and Japan. This catastrophe, which was one of the greatest explosions in the world's disaster, claimed about 36.500 lives.

The first explosion burst out on May 20, 1883, at the time when the Perbuatan crater threw up ash and water vapour to a height of 11 kms to the air. Although this explosion could be heard from the distance of more than 350 kms (up to Palembang), it didn't claim any victims.

On the explosion of August 27, stones were spurted out as high as 55.000 m and the giant wave of tsunami triggered off by the collapse of this mountain swept over 163 nearby villages. The ash reached as far away as 5.330 kms ten days after. The force of the explosion of Krakatoa was estimated to be 26 times greater than the explosion of the strongest hidrogen bomb in any experiment".

Upper Atmosphere Effects

"Ash from the eruptions was propelled to a height of 50 miles (80 kilometers) in the upper atmosphere blocking the sun and plunging the surrounding region into darkness for two and a half days.
Dust and ash from the eruption encircled the Earth in 13 days forming a cloud which, by September 9, 1883, had covered completely the upper atmosphere along a belt in the equatorial zone. Three months after the eruption this belt of volcanic dust of fine particles of dust had spread to higher latitudes causing unusually spectacular red sunsets and other interesting atmospheric effects. Blue and green suns were also observed. Breathtaking sunsets were observed during the winter months of 1884 in both American and Europe. Unusual sunsets continued for almost 3 years".

Climatic Changes

"It has been estimated that at least 21 cubic Km (appr. 11 cubic mile) was ejected from the eruption of Krakatoa and that at least 1 cubic mile of the finer material was blown to a height of about 17 miles (27 Km). The volcanic dust blown into the upper atmosphere was carried several times around the earth by air currents. This volcanic dust veil not only created the spectacular atmospheric effects described previously but acted also as a solar radiation filter, reducing the amount of sunlight reaching the surface of the earth. In the year following the eruption, global temperatures were lowered by as much as 1.2 degree Centigrade on the average. Weather patterns continued to be chaotic for years and there were major climatological changes which affected the entire globe. Temperatures did not return to normal until five years later, in 1888".

Krakatau Volcanic Eruption (Indonesia): May - August 1883 - 1

Centaurs Message #  29239 (updated)

An ancient drawing: Ash and vapours from Krakatau Volcano, after May 20, 1883

"Early in the morning of May 20, 1883, the captain of the German warship Elizabeth reported seeing an ~11-km-high cloud of ash and dust rising above the uninhabited island of Krakatau, thus documenting the first eruption from this Indonesian island in at least two centures.
Over the ensuing two months, crews on commercial vessels and sightseers on charted ships would experience similar spectacles, all of which were associated with explosive noises and churning clouds of black to incandescent ash and pumice. From a distance, the largest of these natural fanfares impressed the local inhabitants on the coastal plains of Java and Sumatra, creating a near-festive environment. Little did they realize, however, that these awe-inspiring displays were only a prelude to one of the largest eruptions in historic times".

"The pre-eruption island of Kratatau was composed of three coalesced volcanoes aligned along a north-northwest direction, parallel to the volcanoes on Sumatra. From north to south, these were Perboewatan, Danan, and Rakata".
