Geological Setting
The African, Arabian, and Indian plates are colliding with the Eurasian plate. Heavy lines with and without barbs indicate the major active faults and plate boundaries. Thin lines are trends of folds generated during the collisions. Northward promontories of the Arabian and Indian Plates have produced complex shortening patterns, particularly in the Hindu Kush-Pamir-Karakoram region. Impingement of the Indian Plate has continued for about 50 million years, whereas the Arabian Plate collision is more recent and began about 20 million years ago.
Oblique rifting marks the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden sides of the Arabian Plate. The Arabian-African Plate boundary must be essentially parallel to the Dead Sea fault. As a visible vector, it illustrates that the Red Sea is opening obliquely (NE-SW); the Gulf of Aden is expanding in the same direction.
As oceanic crust is subducted under a continental margin a sequence of distinctive landforms develops: linear ranges of accreted material (Makran region, Iran and Pakistan) lie along the coast; a topographic depression (Jaz Murian in Iran, Mashkel Basin in Pakistan) form farther inland; and even farther inland is a line of volcanoes (Bazman and Taftan) that marks the melting edge of the downgoing plate.
Where subduction brings another continent against an opposing continental margin, deformation spreads out across a wider band. The Indian continental crash into Eurasia has produced the Tibetan Plateau, as well as all the mountain ranges farther north. The Arabian Plate has barely begun its continental collision; even so, the effects are far-reaching and include reactivation of the boundaries of continental blocks that collided with Eurasia long before the Arabian Plate arrived (e.g., Caucasus-Elburz Mountains, Lut Block, Helmand Block).
